Project Overview
In Summer of 2015, I evaluated a physical prototype model and software screens of a newly designed medical device for a company that specializes in blood-gas analyzers, OPTI Medical Systems, Inc.
This evaluation focused on both physical and digital interactions with the product, and the flow of information between them. We interviewed 18 medical professionals, including perfusionists, respiratory therapists, lab technicians, and lab supervisors.
This research helped deliver:
▸evaluations based on clinician observation and walk-through of their needs with features of similar products - i.e., bar code scanner, cartridge intake, handle
▸recommendations on the physical design of the product
▸recommendations on the design of software screens
▸a research-backed screen flow with more intuitive calls to action
▸a quick start user guide to assist users with new hardware functionality

My Role
I worked with the moderator and project manager to develop user testing plans that accurately mirrored the environment in which medical professionals would use this new product.
I compiled and analyzed notes from interviews and mocked up new software screens implementing findings from research. I also wrote final report summarizing these research findings and design changes, and presented the final deck to internal stakeholders.
Research methods leveraged throughout this project included:
▸think aloud / cognitive walkthroughs
▸usability testing
▸structured interviews
▸participant observation
▸ergonomic analysis
